Paul Maynard MP, Accessibility Minister at the Department for Transport, has today written to me about a consultation he's about to launch into how best to address the gaps in public transport provision for those with physical and hidden disabilities.
He has asked that I spread the word so that people in our community who would like to share their own perspectives can contribute to his consultation. The consultation runs until 15 November.
Paul has advised, 'Disabled people have as much right to travel independently as anyone else and I am committed to delivering a transport system that works for everyone.'
His draft strategy includes:
advocating for greater consistency in the way transport services and facilities are delivered;
ensuring that accessibility features currently required by regulations are consistently monitored and compliance is enforced;
reviewing and monitoring access to parking in line with the Government’s manifesto commitment to improve disabled access to parking;
improving the amount, reliability and available information on passengerfacilities, particularly accessible toilets, at stations and on trains;
highlighting the need for better awareness training for transport staff of the requirements of people with visible and hidden disabilities or impairments, and promoting best practice disability training guidance.
Paul's letter to me is below.
You can find all other relevant information on the draft strategy and consultation on the government's website.
