In my maiden speech this week, I called upon the UK to reach out beyond our borders in an ambitious and optimistic way as we leave the European Union. But it seems Scotts Primary in Hornchurch is already on the case!
Today I met four of their young Global Ambassadors who have begun to build positive new friendships with children in other countries. Last year the Global Ambassadors programme at Scotts saw the school link up with teachers and pupils in Bangladesh, and this week, children welcomed friends from a school just outside Shanghai.
I joined them at a visit to the Town Hall where our new Mayor talked about her civic role and allowed the children to try on her ceremonial robes.
Even though the children shared no common language, they have managed to find similar interests and seem to have a shared fascination in fidget spinners! Hornchurch families also welcomed the Chinese guests into their homes for afternoon tea to allow the children to get a taste of British life.
Thanks to Headteacher, Jan, and her dynamic team at Scotts for the fantastic work they are doing!
