This afternoon I visited Tony, General Manager of Sainsbury's Hornchurch, to learn about the store's plans for the future and their community and charitable work. It admittedly also gave me the chance to reminisce about my own days on the check out at Sainsbury's Bishop's Stortford as well as my deli counter job at the nearby Tesco. Those jobs were crucial in keeping me out of debt and funding living costs and train fares to London when I needed to undertake unpaid internships in the city. Supermarket work gives many other people a critical source of part-time, flexible work, sometimes a second income stream or a full-time role with opportunities for progression, providing both a crucial leg-up and the potential for a long-term career.
