Julia Lopez MP welcomes news that Transport for London is to carry out refurbishment and resurfacing works to the Gallows Corner flyover in readiness of an overhaul of the ageing junction. The works announcement follows a letter sent by the Hornchurch & Upminster MP to Transport Minister, Baroness Vere, in support of TfL’s outline business case for the Gallows works. In response, Baroness Vere has confirmed that her officials are currently considering a draft of the business case before TfL submits it in final form. It will then be put through an assurance process before advice is given to Ministers.
Overnight scoping works on the flyover will take place from September to November and an outline of these works, alongside advice on their impact on the use of the highway, can be found in the attached letter to the MP.
In 2018, Mrs Lopez MP secured for TfL the ability to bid for up to £50m in funding to improve the Gallows Corner junction and TfL originally intended to utilise this opportunity to replace the entire flyover structure. However, in May, TfL advised local representatives that they would, unfortunately, be unable to proceed with their previous plans for the entire replacement of the structure due to cost constraints and the much longer period of disruption that the entire replacement would cause. TfL therefore advised that they would be submitting a business case to access the funding to support a project to refurbish the structure, allowing only those parts which require replacement to be replaced and minimising the period of disruption whilst the work is completed. Last month, Julia wrote to the Minister for Roads, Baroness Vere of Norbiton, to advise that the full business case would soon be forthcoming and to highlight her personal support for the bid. TfL’s final submission is due by the end of summer and Mrs Lopez will continue to monitor progress on this application and to provide whatever support she can to these vital repairs.
Julia Lopez, MP for Hornchurch & Upminster, said: ‘I am glad to see that TfL are making progress in their plans to refurbish the Gallows Corner flyover and ensure the smooth operation of this vital junction in the long-term. I will continue to make the case that these works are absolutely necessary to colleagues in government and to ensure that TfL make progress on the completion of these works.’
