Julia Lopez MP has welcomed the new agenda from the Conservative Government as set out in the King’s Speech and the benefits it will bring to people across Hornchurch & Upminster.
That’s why the Conservative Government has announced plans to deliver a brighter future for our country – setting out the laws that will be delivered over the next parliamentary session.
Legislation will focus on four key areas. First, growing the economy by introducing Bills that protect our energy security, secure the benefits of Brexit and help to integrate new technologies.
Building on the recent successes of our recent AI Safety Summit, the Automated Vehicles Bill, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill, and the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, will open the door to game-changing new technologies like driverless cars and machine learning. With these pieces of legislation and our new AI Safety Institute, we will be able to ensure that there are the right frameworks to support home grown and international tech firms to bring new technologies, compete and grow in the UK.
Second, strengthening society by protecting the health of young people – by limiting access to vapes and tobacco, supporting private renters and landlords, and improving governance in football.
Via the new Leasehold and Freehold Bill will deliver on a manifesto commitment to improve leaseholders’ rights, making it easier and cheaper for leaseholders to extend their lease or buy their freehold as well as increasing the standard lease extension term from 90 to 990 years. The Conservative Government is also pressing ahead with the Renters’ (Reform) Bill that was introduced earlier this year–delivering on their manifesto commitment to abolish ‘no fault evictions’ as well as strengthening landlords’ grounds for possession and introducing stronger powers to evict anti-social tenants. These measures will deliver a fairer housing market for leaseholders, tenants and landlords.
With the Football Governance Bill the Government will establish an Independent Football Regulator tasked with putting fans back at the heart of the game and ensuring the financial stability of clubs.
Third, keeping people safe by making sure the police have the powers they need, criminals get the punishment they deserve, and society is protected from terrorism. This includes the Sentencing Bill and the Criminal Justice Bill, giving the police more powers to keep us safe.
New measures include the Sentencing Bill, which will keep rapists and other serious sexual offenders behind bars for the whole of their custodial terms and make Whole Life Orders available for murderers who kill with sexual or sadistic conduct, so life really will mean life.
The Criminal Justice Bill will give police the tools they need to prevent crimes like digital-enabled crime, child sexual abuse, and child grooming. There will be additional safeguarding protections for our children and new measures against those who would harm them, police will have more powers to seize and destroy knives and criminals may face reasonable force if they refuse to appear in the dock.
Finally, the King’s Speech set out the Government’s commitment to promoting our national interests by backing our Armed Forces, supporting Ukraine and leading the way on the challenges of the future: climate change and AI.
In each of these areas the Conservative Government is taking the right long-term action to deliver change and a brighter future for everyone in the United Kingdom, whilst continuing to halve inflation, prioritise higher growth over extra borrowing, reduce debt, relieve pressure on the NHS by cutting waiting lists and, crucially, implement the world-leading small boats laws to crush the people smuggling gangs and stop the boats.
