A new course to help local residents manage their finances launched earlier this week on Wednesday in Havering. Hornchurch & Upminster MP, Julia Lopez, met local Debt Coaches, Sally Mills and Claire Haley, in parliament last week to learn more about how constituents stand to benefit.
Sally and Claire work for Christians Against Poverty and will be delivering the group's Money Course from the Kingsheart Church in Collier Row. The course takes four weeks, with two hours of direct support every week - teaching residents how best to track and monitor spending, build a budget and respond to unexpected expenses. The course will be available first to those already receiving debt advice, however they hope to expand the offer soon, working with local community groups to identify people who stand to benefit most from extra help.
Julia said,
"A lot of people have found themselves under money pressures in recent years as food and energy bills have gone up. I know for some residents, it has been really hard to stay out of debt so it was great to meet Sally and Claire to hear about what they do to help people move from that tough place and get control of their finances again. I would encourage anyone under those kinds of pressures to get help like this, and I am really glad that CAP is expanding what they do to bring in practical support like the money course"
Sally Mills, Romford CAP Debt Centre Manager, said:
"We are really looking forward to bringing the CAP Money Coaching Course to the residents of Havering. Budgeting is an essential life skill which many don't practice and it helps prevent people getting into debt. With the Cost of Living Crisis impacting so many people there is an increasing need for this kind of support and we are really excited to get started."
